Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of play.
Rai sank a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot clear with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an superb final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
