A massive Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the company of a popular sushi restaurant group, which runs restaurants throughout Japan and overseas.

"The year's tuna heralds good luck," commented the company president, a notable participant at the yearly new year's auction.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is renowned for placing high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," stating, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price soared before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition surpasses his own record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be featured at its locations nationwide.

The high-energy energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no exception.

From Auction to Plate

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one happy customer.
