The loved ones of young people lost after a devastating blaze at a bar in a Switzerland's winter destination are facing an excruciating wait for confirmed information and pleading for any details about their loved ones via social media.
The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Confirmed video reveal the ceiling igniting as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take an extended period to formally name the victims of the disaster, which resulted in the death of 40 people and hurt another 119. A spokesperson said on Friday that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with the process ongoing to name the final individuals.
In the waiting period, loved ones have been posting on social media to request any news about their friends who were in attendance that fateful night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are still unconfirmed, according to an public plea from his mother.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had gone back to Lausanne to see if he was in the medical facility, while his father did the equivalent search in Bern, but could not find him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she told the paper.
She added that some of his peers had been located with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they experienced a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian foreign ministry has confirmed that a number of of its citizens have not been located.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, who hailed from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has said that he is deceased, without directly referencing the fire, honoring a "young athlete who carried with him dedication and authentic values."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An representative has stated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise among the missing. His parent said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the bar.
"Someone with him informed me they escaped after the fire started and that he had his phone with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she said, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
