Larry Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors

Leadership Change
The economist stated he would withdraw from public duties after House committee disclosed his frequent communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

He remarked in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and eagerly await observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who once headed Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his association with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications demonstrated that the official corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the AI firm stated it understood his decision to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This news follows after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to approve a bill that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its files on Epstein.

The bill will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his stance on the issue following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-related correspondence made public by the legislative panel last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The messages showed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to connect Summers to prominent international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were shared with the wider community, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend relationships with the people most important to me".

Professional History

Summers occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He headed Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where the professor was a researcher, verified that the economist was no longer affiliated with the group.

Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
