The Heartbreaking Shift Only 12 Months Has Brought in the United States

Twelve months back, the situation was entirely distinct. Prior to the US presidential election, thoughtful Americans could acknowledge America's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – but they still could see it as the United States. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order held significance. A nation headed by a honorable and upright official, despite his elderly years and declining health.

Nowadays, this autumn, many of us scarcely know the land we inhabit. Individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants are rounded up and pushed into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the White House – is being torn down to build a lavish event space. The leader is targeting his opponents or perceived antagonists and demanding the justice department hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are dispatched across metropolitan centers with deceptive justifications. The defense headquarters, renamed the Defense Ministry, has practically rid itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Universities, legal practices, media outlets are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are regarded as members of the royal family.

“The US, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the edge into autocracy and fascism,” Garrett Graff, wrote in August. “Ultimately, more quickly than I thought feasible, it occurred here.”

Every morning starts with fresh terrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

Yet, it is known that the leader was properly voted in. Despite his highly troubling initial presidency and despite the cautions associated with the understanding of Project 2025 – even after the president personally declared plainly he intended to act as an autocrat solely at the start – sufficient voters selected him rather than Kamala Harris.

While alarming as the current reality may be, it’s even scarier to realize that we have only been nine months under this leadership. What will an additional three years of this downfall position us? And what if that period turns into an prolonged era, since there is nobody to restrain this leader from deciding that another term is essential, perhaps for security concerns?

Granted, there is still hope. We will have congressional elections next year that may establish an alternate governmental control, in case Democrats retake the Senate or House of parliament. We have public servants who are striving to apply some accountability, like representatives who are starting a probe concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.

And a national vote three years from now could begin the path to healing precisely as last year’s election put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of America is awakening”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or amid the Vietnam war protests or during the seventies crisis.

In those instances, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

He claims he recognizes the indicators of that revival and sees it happening at present. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, bipartisan pushback against a broadcaster's firing and the largely united rejection by reporters to accept military mandates they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists dormant till some venality becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive of societal benefit, some brutality so noisy, that he is forced but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I respect Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may be validated.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues endure: will the nation regain its footing? Can it retrieve its position internationally and its commitment to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the historical project worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the final scenario is accurate; that all may indeed be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we need to strive, by any means we can.

Personally, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to live up, more thoroughly, to their mission of overseeing leadership. For others, it might involve participating in political races, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to protect voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we were in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The truth is, we cannot predict. The only option is to strive to persevere.
